Panel Assessment Tests
To attain each level of accreditation technicians will have to pass practical assessments and an online knowledge test. Each element has an allotted time in which to complete the task.
Panel Technician
(2 days)

Practical assessments will measure competence in:
- MIG welding to BSI standards 1mm
- Spot welding to BSI standards 1mm
- Rectification of panel damage - panel beating techniques
- Preparation, application and finishing of cold filler
- Panel removal and replacement procedures - bolted panel
- Panel removal and replacement procedures - welded panel
The online test (1 hour) will measure knowledge in the following areas:
- Legislation, health and safety relating to body repair
- Non-structural panel removal and replacement procedures
- Repair of non-structural body panels
- Welding techniques and methods
- Vehicle construction and materials
- Vehicle body repair techniques, materials, methods and data
Equipment used:
- Spot welding using a TECHNA Inverta
- MIG welding using KEMPI and MUREX welding equipment
Senior Panel Technician
(3 days)
£1350*
Practical assessments will measure competence in:
- Set up, measure and realign body structure using a body jig and hydraulic push pull system
- Panel removal and replacement procedures - bolted panel
- Panel removal and replacement procedures - welded panel
- Preparation, application and finishing of cold filler
- MIG brazing
- Repair of a cosmetic aluminium panel
- MIG welding to BSI standards 1mm
- Spot welding to BSI standards 1mm
- Rectification of panel damage - panel beating techniques
The online test (1 hour) will measure knowledge in the following areas:
- Legislation, health and safety relating to body repair
- Selection and use of materials and data
- Selection and use of tools and equipment
- Welding techniques and procedures
- Vehicle body repair techniques, materials, methods and data
Equipment used:
- Rectification of chassis misalignment using a BLACKHAWK SHARK 2 measuring system and a KOREK 3000 jig
- Spot welding using a TECHNA Inverta
- MIG welding using KEMPI and MUREX welding equipment
- MAGS brazing using KEMPI KEMPACT 2800 welding equipment
After the Test
You will receive verbal notification of your assessment outcome at the end of the test period. Should you fail we will provide written guidance on your training needs. If successful you will receive your photo identity card within two weeks direct from IMI Awards.
You will be able to complete a partial re-assessment in those areas in which you were not successful at an additional cost. However, if you are unsuccessful in more than two practical assignments you will need to take the whole assessment again.
Make the Most of Your Accreditation
Accreditation is valid for five years from the day of your assessment, after which time you will need to complete a full re-assessment to renew your accreditation.
Further Information
Online Tests
To pass the online test the applicant will be required to achieve a mark of 60% or above. Online re-tests can be taken with us even if you are referred by another test centre at a cost of £50.
Completing Assessments
Partial re-assessments: To ensure currency of assessments full achievement must be within twelve months.
